But a lot of them are heavily modified now and some really aren't good so just see what you can find. If you can find a good late 70's (JMP) or early 80's JCM800, which are basically the same amp then you might get a real bargain because they have that great sound (and a pedal gives the sort of gain that you might need) but they're not as expensive as the early 70's JMPs or the very costly 60's plexis etc. That will immediately do much more what you expect. Avoid all those, all JCM900's and all of those 3 channel anniversary amps etc. It's not what that company's reputation was built on. Far too many knobs, buttons, extra gains this, mid shifts that. All I'm looking for is a nice crisp, clear, high gain tone for use in punk / post-punk (think Thrice Fire EP, new Underoath, new Propagandhi, ect.)Īm I ********, or has anyone else experienced this with the JCM2000? And if you have had any success with this head, having the genre of music I mentioned in mind, HOW did you do it? I feel like I've tried everything. Even if we get a good live tone, as soon as I try and pull some gain away to get more note distinction and clarity for gain staging, it simply sucks all the life out of the tone, leaving some half-assed, uninspired tone that falls short in every way. In my experiences, unless this head is on stun with some tube screamer and played live, the 2000 has two modes: ON or OFF. Last night was with a Fender American Fat Tele, a modded 54 strat, and a Godin LGX.

I usually set it up with a 1980 lead cab, or a 900SLX cab, throw a 57 and a 421 (or SM7) on her, throw the power amp up full blast, dial in my eq and preamp gain, move around and phase align my mics, put it all through my API3124+ straight in to my HD rig, and then marvel back at how bad this head is at low gain settings. I'm in pre-pro right now, and the only head in the house at the moment is the JCM, so of course, we use what we have at this stage. I have given up! I'm pretty much decided that it can't be done. I have been trying to get a decent tone out of our JCM2000 TSL60 for what seems like years now. More of a rant, but a purposeful one at that.
